Is vaping harmful? Vaping side effects
Finally, diacetyl, pentanedione, O-vanillin, maltol, coumarin, and CAD induced significant IL-8 secretion from MM6 and U937 monocytes [86]. It should be borne in mind, however, that the concentrations assayed were in the supra-physiological range and it is likely that, once inhaled, these concentrations are not reached in the airway space. Indeed, one of the limitations of the study was that human cells are not exposed to e-liquids per se, but rather to the aerosols where the concentrations are lower [86].
Every provider at Loma Linda University Health can tell you how important it is to keep your lungs healthy. Our lung specialists, like Dr. Laren Tan, see patients every day who suffer from debilitating lung issues caused by smoking. If you experience side effects from vaping, get advice from a stop smoking adviser or specialist vape retailer before you decide to stop using a vape as your quit smoking tool. Remember to keep vapes and e-liquid out of the reach of children and pets, as there is a risk of poisoning if nicotine is swallowed. So far, no vaping products have been licensed as stop smoking medicines in the UK, so they are not available on prescription from the NHS or from a GP.
You may have heard different things in the media about the side effects of vaping. This page gives an overview of what we know so far about how vaping can affect your health. Our information relates to legal e-cigarettes – ones that are registered with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA). Prohibiting e-cigarette use inside or near buildings, vehicles and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate exposure to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol and health risks that may come with it.
Hence, e-cigarette use is commonly described as vaping, a term also used in reference to the use of similar devices, including vape pens and e-hookas. Lots of people want to know about the health effects of e-cigarettes. They’re still a relatively new product, so it’s too soon to know for sure.
It may be that vendors are flouting the new law, are ignorant of it, or do not believe the new law applies to online sales. The recent ordinance aligns with other cities, such as Petaluma, Sebastopol and Windsor, which have also outlawed the sale of e-cigarettes and flavored tobacco. • Yereth Rosen came to Alaska in 1987 to work for the Anchorage Times.
PHE’s remit letter for 2014 to 2015 requested an update of the evidence around e-cigarettes. PHE commissioned Professors Ann McNeill and Peter Hajek to review the available evidence. The review builds on previous evidence summaries published by PHE in 2014. All of our local NHS Stop Smoking Services now proactively welcome anyone who wants to use these devices as part of their quit attempt and increase their chance of success. Cancer Research UK is funding more research to deal with the unanswered questions around these products including the longer-term impact.
Notably, the reverse was not true—students who said they smoked cigarettes were no more likely to report use of e-cigarettes when asked approximately 6 months later. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are tobacco products that have been sold in the U.S. for about a decade. They include e-pens, e-pipes, e-hookah, and e-cigars, known collectively as ENDS—electronic nicotine delivery systems. They’re also sometimes called JUULs, “vapes” and “vape pens.” E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among kids—and it’s become an epidemic. While much remains to be determined about the lasting health consequences of e-cigarettes tpms en el tablero, there’s evolving evidence about the health risks of e-cigarettes on the lungs—including irreversible lung damage and lung disease.
Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study used data from the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) database. The BRFSS is the largest national telephone-based survey of randomly sampled adults in the US. Adults aged 18 years or older, residing in 49 US states (all except Florida), the District of Columbia, and 3 US territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands), were included in the data set. Nicotine can harm brains as they develop—which continues until age 25 or older!
The 2019 data revealed that 45% borrowed or “bummed” them, 14% gave money to other people to buy them and 8% were given the products by adults. My reading of the evidence is that smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks smoking poses to their health. Smokers differ in their needs and I would advise them not to give up on e-cigarettes if they do not like the first one they try.
It should be noted that there are seven FDA-approved quit aids that are proven safe and can be effective when used as directed. To date, no e-cigarette has been approved as a cessation device or authorized to make a modified risk claim, and more research is needed to understand the potential risks and benefits these products may offer adults who use tobacco products. The mid-to-long-term consequences of e-cigarettes are not yet known, as it’s a new product and has been sold for less than a decade in the U.S. While much remains to be determined about these lasting health consequences of these products, we are very troubled by what we see so far.
Children 13–15-years old are using e-cigarettes at rates higher than adults in all WHO regions. In Canada, the rates of e-cigarette use among 16–19-year-olds has doubled between 2017–2022, and in England (the United Kingdom) the number of young users has tripled in the past three years. There’s no evidence so far that vaping causes harm to other people around you. If you suspect you have experienced a health-related side effect from using your e-cigarette or would like to report a product defect, report these via the Yellow Card Scheme.
The agency has taken a multitude of actions to keep ENDS out of the hands of youth, from policy making to enforcement to education. The Surgeon General reports e-cigarette use among youth is a significant public health concern and steps must be taken by parents, educators and especially policymakers to discourage use of e-cigarettes. Learn more about e-cigarettes lung health risks and get downloadable resources for parents, schools and teens. E-cigarettes are devices that heat a liquid into an aerosol that the user inhales. The liquid usually has nicotine and flavoring in it, and other additives.
The Ministry of Finance would instruct customs to manage the transportation of e-cigarettes through the border, and to tackle smuggling. The data about high school students in the new report is from the 2019 Alaska Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a system of anonymous questionnaires sponsored by the U.S. Of the three bills approved by the committee Monday, two deal directly with enforcement and penalties. One bill, A2388, would require vape retailers to be inspected at least twice every year to see if they are selling illegal products.
Talk to your kids about e-cigarettes while they’re still willing to listen. In a recently published randomised trial of 886 subjects who were willing to quit smoking [100], the abstinence rate was found to be twice as high in the e-cigarette group than in the nicotine-replacement group (18.0% vs. 9.9%) after 1 year. Of note, the abstinence rate found in the nicotine-replacement group was lower than what is usually expected with this therapy. Nevertheless, the incidence of throat and mouth irritation was higher in the e-cigarette group than in the nicotine-replacement group (65.3% vs. 51.2%, respectively). Also, the participant adherence to the treatment after 1-year abstinence was significantly higher in the e-cigarette group (80%) than in nicotine-replacement products group (9%) [100]. Of note, another study indicated that although RANTES/CCL5 and CCR1 mRNA were upregulated in flavour/nicotine-containing e-cigarette users, vaping flavour and nicotine-less e-cigarettes did not significantly dysregulate cytokine and inflammasome activation [43].
In 2008, just after e-cigarettes showed up in the U.S. and Europe, the World Health Organization urged marketers to remove claims that e-cigarettes are a safe and effective way to quit smoking because no scientific evidence was available to support those claims. “These electronic cigarettes are also marketed for their flavors that are more appealing than the musty, odorous tobacco cigarettes have been and are targeted to a different generation,” Mansour said. Stay up to date on the adverse health effects of smoking and vaping tobacco while gaining important guidance on how to counsel patients on the risks and quitting. Be aware that some e-cigarettes that claim to be nicotine-free have been found to contain nicotine. Companies that make or sell e-cigarettes must follow certain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. For example, only people age 21 and over are allowed to buy e-cigarettes.
Youth and young adults had more than three times the odds of using fruit-flavored e-cigarettes compared to older adults. A 2017 study by Truth Initiative found 25% of survey respondents, aged 15-24, recognized a JUUL e-cigarette device when shown a photo of the product. And among those who recognized JUUL oxbar pro vape, 25% reported that use of this product is called “JUULing,” indicating that this product is so distinctive, it’s perceived as its own category. However, it’s likely that recognition is higher now given that JUUL’s sales market share continued to rise throughout 2018 and top out at 75% among U.S. e-cigarette sales in July 2019. With Americans puffing less each year, the cigarette industry sees ESDs and other smokeless products as financial saviors.
The Attorney General’s Office is committed to the enforcement of tobacco and nicotine control laws, including e-cigarette laws, and preventing youth access to these products. Secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer in people who don’t smoke. This toolkit is for Minnesota school staff, including administrators, educators, teachers, and health services staff, who are working to address the use of e-cigarettes in schools. It outlines opportunities for action, along with resources and tools to help youth quit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) “The Real Cost” campaign seeks to prevent susceptible youth from trying tobacco or becoming regular users. The campaign works to counteract the “cost-free” mentality held by many adolescents regarding e-cigarette use, showing them how e-cigarettes, just like cigarettes veiik vape 5000 puffs, puts them at risk for addiction and other health consequences.
All individuals should also be strongly counseled to not revert to smoking. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that work by heating a liquid into an aerosol that the user inhales and exhales. The e-cigarette liquid typically contains nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings, and other chemicals. Nicotine is the addictive drug found in regular cigarettes and other tobacco products. Research shows that e-cigarette aerosol often contains substances that can be harmful, including flavoring chemicals (like diacetyl, which is linked to lung disease), metals (like lead), and other cancer-causing chemicals.
A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015 found a connection too. Researchers surveyed 2,500 Los Angeles high school students who had never smoked. They found that kids who used e-cigs were more likely than non-users to smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products over the next year.
Toll said he has patients who describe keeping their e-cigarettes under their pillows so they can vape right before going to sleep and then again immediately upon waking in the morning. People who smoke cigarettes have to get a cigarette from the pack and light it. There are also natural stopping points – when the cigarette is finished, it must be snuffed out, and when the pack is used up, it must be thrown away and a new one purchased and opened before the person can smoke again.
Although PG and glycerol are the major components of e-liquids other components have been detected. Of note, the analysis identified formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein [4], 3 carbonyl compounds with known high toxicity [63,64,65,66,67]. While no information was given regarding formaldehyde and acetaldehyde concentrations, the authors calculated that one puff could result in an acrolein exposure of 0.003–0.015 μg/mL [4].
They have to give us all the chemistry and toxicology data, and they have to identify what’s in the product, including the liquid and the aerosol it generates. We can also do physical inspections of their manufacturing facilities, or remote records inspections, to verify the information in an application. We were prepared both operationally and from a scientific review standpoint.
In fact, they are widely used as alimentary and pharmaceutical products [2]. In an analysis of 54 commercially available e-liquids, PG and glycerol were detected in almost all samples at concentrations ranging from 0.4% to 98% (average 57%) and from 0.3% to 95% (average 37%), respectively [35]. It is also noteworthy that among the 3 most cytotoxic vapours for HUVEC evaluated in the Putzhammer et al. study, 2 were nicotine-free, which suggests that nicotine is not the only hazardous component in e-cigarettes [24].
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Lung Association are glad to have the rules. But, Sward adds, “We certainly thought [the FDA] should have gone farther — ending the sale of flavored products.” Some come in candy and fruity flavors that appeal to kids and teens. “Diacetyl is a well-known harmful chemical, which, among other things, causes a lung disease called ‘popcorn lung,’” says Erika Sward, assistant vice president for national advocacy at the American Lung Association. The severity of the damage, aspects of which occur even in the absence of nicotine, varies among popular flavors, the researchers said. Vape explosions have been linked to faulty batteries in vaping devices. Sonoma County’s ordinance, which will take effect 30 days after passing, aligns with the cities of Petaluma, Sebastopol and Windsor, which have also outlawed the sale of e-cigarettes and flavored tobacco.
The age-standardized prevalence of current e-cigarette use among individuals who reported never using combustible cigarettes was 2.9% (95% CI, 2.8%-3.1%). The prevalence was higher among individuals who reported former combustible cigarette use, at 17.2% (95% CI, 16.5%-18.0%), and current combustible cigarette use, at 17.9% (95% CI, 17.1%-18.7%). The age-standardized prevalence of daily e-cigarette use by smoking status showed similar patterns (Table 2). In a recent study, about 18% of people who switched to vaping had been able to quit smoking. That’s about twice as many people as those who used other methods to quit smoking. Of people who used other methods, 91% kicked nicotine products altogether.

Although evidence is lacking, e-cigarettes for inhalation of nicotine may be beneficial in reducing adverse health effects related to the use of combustible tobacco products. However, e-cigarettes are not FDA approved as a smoking cessation tool and the amount of nicotine and other substances a person inhales from each nicotine cartridge remains unclear. When FDA “deemed” e-cigarettes as part of its jurisdiction in 2016, it gave e-cigarettes that were currently on the market two years to prepare premarket applications (known as PMTAs). These applications are what FDA uses to to determine whether new tobacco products are “appropriate for the protection of public health” before they are allowed on the market.
So when it comes to flavored e-cigarettes, we have this built-in concern about the popularity of those products with kids. But Congress did include mandatory considerations in the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. And so, by law, when we get one of these applications, we have to consider the product’s impact on existing users of cigarettes and other tobacco products and on nonusers of the product.
Middlekauff’s team is interested in researching electronic cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool in groups that have large disparities in tobacco use and in cardiovascular death related to tobacco. The present study results have important implications for the use of e-cigarettes as a cessation tool. “If somebody who smokes tobacco cigarettes is thinking of using electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation, they should realize that there’s potential risk in doing so, especially males,” says Middlekauff. The research led by Mohinder Vindhyal, M.D., M.Ed., was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 68th Annual Scientific Session, with details shared in an ACC press release that prompted international news headlines.
International regulation of e-cigarettes varies widely, and, due to the relatively recent introduction of the product category, is rapidly changing. Teens and young adults can text “DITCHVAPE” to and get immediate help. Home to an array of public health programs, initiatives and interventions aimed at improving the health and well-being of women, infants, families and communities. The continuum is inclusive of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention activities. “The nicotine in e-cigarettes causes irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) in a dose-dependent manner by stimulating the very receptor that many heart medications are designed to inhibit,” Carll said. Due to concerns about adverse events being more likely in older age groups, the sample was limited to adults aged 25 to 45 years.
United States federal law does not allow the sale of tobacco products to people under the age of 21. However, a major concern about vaping is its attraction for young people. These data overall indicate that the harmful effects of nicotine should not be underestimated. Despite the established regulations, some inaccuracies in nicotine content labelling remain in different brands of e-liquids. Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required.
Compared with heterosexual individuals, persons who identified as bisexual had a higher prevalence of current e-cigarette use (12.2% [95% CI, 11.0%-13.7%] vs 6.8% [95% CI, 6.6%-7.1%]) and daily e-cigarette use (6.5% [95% CI, 5.4%-7.8%] vs 3.2% [95% CI, 3.0%-3.3%]). We summarized participant sociodemographics and chronic health conditions using proportions for the entire sample and for those reporting current and daily e-cigarette use. We calculated the age-standardized prevalence of current and daily e-cigarette use overall, within subgroups including combustible cigarette use categories (never, former, or current), and across age groups. Household income level was based on the 2021 federal poverty line.20 Weight and height were self-reported; body mass index was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
Objective To examine recent patterns in current and daily e-cigarette use among US adults in 2021. For teens and young adults, nicotine may alter the way their brains function for the rest of their lives. Take this quiz to get the facts on e-cigarette use among youth and young adults.
Youth use of e-cigarettes continues to be an emerging public health challenge. Addressing this requires the collaboration of local, state and national partners along with those working directly with youth, such as school administrators, nurses, teachers and others to ensure all young people can learn in an environment free from e-cigarette use. However, e-cigarettes may help non-pregnant adult smokers if used as a complete substitute for all cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.

In 2021 “other” flavored devices made up 71 percent of all disposable devices sold or given away, with the most-popular subcategories being fruit-flavored and fruit & menthol/mint flavored products. These two subcategories alone made up more than half of all disposable e-cigarette devices sold or given away in 2021. HB1540, sponsored in the House by Rep. Camille Lilly and in the Senate by Sen. Julie Morrison, adds electronic smoking devices to the list of items prohibited for public indoor use under the Smoke Free Illinois Act, the indoor smoking ban that was enacted in 2008.
The numbers suggest recreational users who don’t have access to a dispensary are more at risk of developing EVALI than those who have access to a dispensary. What’s clear so far is that vaping is involved and vitamin E acetate is not the only culprit. Such findings are deeply concerning because compounds like lead and uranium are known to be harmful to human development. The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Stanford Diabetes Research Center, the University of California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program and the FDA.
E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, which is the harmful part of cigarettes that causes cancer. The 2024 E-Cigarette Summit marks 60 years since the publication of U.S Surgeon General Luther Terry’s landmark report on smoking and health – a consensus document that unequivocally established the link between smoking and serious disease. Viewed as the catalyst for the modern-day tobacco control movement, the 1964 report remains a historic example of the importance of science-led public health action. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items.
Vape products are taxed at the sales tax rate rather than the tobacco or cigarette tax rate. While vape products are not covered by the Smoke-free Air Act, each business can prohibit the use of vape devices indoors, but this is not required by state law. Learn more about potential health hazards of secondhand aerosol (a.k.a. vapor) emitted by electronic cigarettes and electronic smoking devices. While e-cigarettes typically have fewer chemicals than regular cigarettes, they may still contain heavy metals like lead, flavorings linked to lung disease, small particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs система контроля давления в шинах отзывы, and cancer-causing chemicals. Being near someone using an e-cigarette can expose you to the aerosol and the chemicals in it.
We calculated the optimal puff duration of 3 s every 30 s based on published data.16–21 This allows time for the vapour to condense between each puff and prevented overheating of the device; 1.4 mL of ECL/nicotine-free ECL (nfECL) was vaped from each device. On completion, suction traps were normalised to room temperature and spun at 1500g for 10 min to collect the condensate. The liquid and vapour contain some potentially harmful chemicals also found in cigarette smoke, but at a much lower level. Find out more about e-cigarettes, e-liquids and vaping to quit smoking on the Better Health website. FDA approved tobacco treatment medications can help people trying to quit smoking. These include over-the-counter and prescription options, which are known to be effective.
Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs), e-cigars, and e-pipes are some of the many tobacco product terms used to describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
And finally, the exposure to point-of-sale marketing of e-cigarette has also been identified to affect the smoking cessation success [96]. Is there sufficient toxicological data on all the components employed in e-liquids? Do we really know the composition of the inhaled vapour during the heating process and its impact on health?
Another notable observation was the high proportion of daily use among persons who reported current e-cigarette use, indicating a possible transition toward established use and potential nicotine dependence. These findings are of value to the tobacco regulatory science community and to policy makers, and they underscore the rationale for the implementation and enforcement of public health policies tailored to young adults. We observed a high proportion (71.5%) of individuals aged 18 to 20 years who reported current e-cigarette use without concurrent use of combustible cigarettes. This observation aligns with patterns observed in prior BRFSS years (34.5% in 2017, 37.3% in 2018, and 44.4% in 2020),5,6 albeit with numerically higher findings in our study. An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a device that heats up the liquid nicotine and flavoring for you to breathe in. There are many varieties of e-cigarettes that go by different names, including vapes, vape pens or sticks, e-hookahs, hookah sticks, mods and personal vaporizers (PVs).
Users have reported a growing list of potential e-cigarette side effects such as seizures, strokes, respiratory failure and bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia, or BOOP. The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The AMA has been a leading force to eliminate public smoking and warn people about the dangers of smoking, including secondhand smoke, since the 1960s.
As of April 1st, 2024, 1,061 municipalities, plus 26 states, commonwealths, and territories restrict e-cigarette use in 100% smokefree venues. Statistical analyses were performed using GraphPad PRISM 6.0 software package (San Diego, California, USA). Results are expressed as the median with IQR, unless specified otherwise. All results are representative of at least eight independent experiments performed in duplicate. Differences between multiple treatments were compared by the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by Dunn’s multiple comparison post-test correction.
Share this quiz on social media and challenge your friends to see how well they know the facts. An outbreak of EVALI in late 2019 and early 2020 put thousands of people in the hospital. Since then, EVALI cases have been declining, but people who vape can still get EVALI.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has regulatory authority over synthetic nicotine as it does over tobacco-derived nicotine. Scroll to the top of the page and click on the blue “Order Publications” box for ordering information and to complete the order form. Check with your airline on any limitations on the number of devices that can be carried for personal use by a passenger. Research from the CDC shows that vaping among youth has declined somewhat since 2020. In response to this issue, the PACT Act Amendment prohibits sellers from using the U.S. Post Office to ship e-cigarettes, vapes, flavored and smokeless tobacco products. The PACT Act applies to all shipments in interstate commerce (15 U.S.C. § 376) as well as to all delivery sales. While e-cigarettes are often marketed as a way for adults to quit nicotine, a whole new generation of non-smokers is now taking to the habit in young adulthood.
Only 23 e-cigarette and vaping products have been authorized to be sold in the U.S. by the federal Food and Drug Administration. But there are thousands of products available in retail and online shops, said Charlie Giblin oxva xlim juice, a retired criminal investigator supervisor with the state Department of the Treasury, which regulates vaping and tobacco products. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are devices made to resemble cigarettes.
Numerous studies have been performed to evaluate the safety/toxicity of e-cigarette use both in vivo and in in vitro cell culture. “Popcorn lung” is another name for bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), a rare condition that results from damage of the lungs’ small airways. BO was originally discovered when popcorn factory workers started getting sick. The culprit was diacetyl, a food additive used to simulate butter flavor in microwave popcorn. There’s no specific antidote for nicotine poisoning, but medical professionals can provide medications to help support patients experiencing more serious symptoms of nicotine poisoning.
The American Lung Association recommends creating a smoking plan that includes medication plus counseling, as this combination has the highest rates of success in permanently quitting smoking. Protect the environment and ensure safe disposal of e-cigarette products by discarding them properly. Vapes, e-cigarettes, refills and cartridges should be treated like hazardous waste and taken to your local hazardous waste facility or hazardous waste collection event for disposal. Always remove the device’s battery before dropping off to prevent unintentional burns, fires, and explosions. Store these products safely to protect yourself and any children in and around the home from accidental exposure. Poisoning from nicotine and e-cigarette liquid can occur by drinking it, spilling it on the skin, and breathing too much vapor.
These products are also sometimes called “JUULs” (after a branded e-cigarette of the same name), “vapes,” and “vape pens.” Governor Gretchen Whitmer has taken aggressive action to protect Michigan kids from the harmful effects of vaping digiflavor flavors, including making Michigan the first state in the nation to ban flavored nicotine vaping products. To protect kids now, states and cities must also continue their growing efforts to end the sale of flavored e-cigarettes, as well as other flavored tobacco products.
The ACS does not recommend the use of e-cigarettes as a cessation method. No e-cigarette has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe and effective cessation product. Even without regulatory changes, however, the research suggests that users may reduce potential harm by opting for e-cigarettes with freebase nicotine instead of nicotine salts or using e-cigarettes with a lower nicotine content. These examples are programmatically compiled from various online sources to illustrate current usage of the word ‘electronic cigarette.’ Any opinions expressed in the examples do not represent those of Merriam-Webster or its editors.
The inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung diseases. This study examined the impact on adult e-cigarette users from the recent e-cigarette-only flavor bans in Washington State, New Jersey, and New York. We found that most respondents continued to use e-cigarettes with banned flavors post-ban and obtain banned-flavor e-cigarettes through legal channels. Enforcing compliance of retailers to the policy is crucial to control e-cigarette use. First, we depicted the characteristics of respondents from the three states with chi-square tests to evaluate demographic differences by state and the distribution of respondents by their tobacco and nicotine use status.
These medications can make you nearly two times as likely to successfully quit smoking. Flavors, including mint and menthol, are one of the top reasons young people use e-cigarettes. Candy and fruit-flavored e-liquids can make e-cigarettes appealing and seem harmless.
An e-cigarette, vape pen or other electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) heats a liquid of nicotine, flavoring, propylene glycol and other additives into an aerosol that you inhale through a mouthpiece. Vaping can cause breathing problems, organ damage, addiction and other conditions. Additionally, a study of adult smokers in Europe found those who vaped nicotine were less like to have stopped smoking than those who did not.
The Department has sent a statewide health alert to health care providers and local health departments following recent reports of severe lung disease in people who have used vaping products. The cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory effects of different e-cigarette flavouring chemicals were also tested on two human monocytic cell lines—mono mac 6 (MM6) and U937 [86]. Among the flavouring chemicals tested, CAD was found to be the most toxic and O-vanillin and pentanedione also showed significant cytotoxicity; by contrast, acetoin, diacetyl, maltol, and coumarin did not show any toxicity at the concentrations assayed (10–1000 µM). Of interest, a higher toxicity was evident when combinations of different flavours or mixed equal proportions of e-liquids from 10 differently flavoured e-liquids were tested, suggesting that vaping a single flavour is less toxic than inhaling mixed flavours [86]. Also, all the tested flavours produced significant levels of ROS in a cell-free ROS production assay.
By 2021, the percentage of EVP use was higher in girls (5.6%) than boys (4.5%), a one-and-one-quarter increase. An employer, manager or other person in charge cannot fire, refuse to hire, penalize, discriminate or retaliate against an employee, applicant or customer who exercises any right to a smoke-free environment provided under the MCIAA. “Indoor Area” means a space between a floor and a ceiling that is at least 50% enclosed by walls tpms sensor honda, doorways or windows (open or closed) around the perimeter. The Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act (MCIAA) is a state law that describes where smoking is prohibited, outlines the responsibilities of employers, managers, and other persons in charge and lists exemptions that affect their workplaces and facilities.
13 Investigates digs into the numbers and how the districts have taken on HB114, tonight on Eyewitness News at 10 p.m. Over the year, ABC13 heard from parents and experts both praising and opposing the law, sponsored by State Rep. Ed Thompson, R-Brazoria County, that requires mandatory placement in an alternative school for any student caught in possession of an e-cigarette. Eleaf devices don’t bog you down with extra features; they deliver simple functionality with unmatched longevity. If you’re looking for no-fuss, affordably MTL gear, there are simple tanks and mods to enjoy, such as the GS Air 2 Tank and Istick I40 Mod, which provide ease of use for those seeking cigarette-style moderate vapour production.
While there has been a decline in traditional cigarette smoking among U.S. teens, the introduction and rise of electronic vapor products (EVPs) pose new public health challenges. Vaping devices, also known as e-cigarettes or electronic vapor products (EVPs), are often marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes and attract many users with their diverse flavors. A note from Cleveland ClinicNicotine poisoning is on the rise, mostly due to the availability of some of the newer forms of nicotine that are now popular. Children eat cigarettes and can be accidentally poisoned by touching, tasting or swallowing liquid nicotine or liquid nicotine-containing products used in e-cigarettes.
WHO strives to build a safer, healthier world for everyone, everywhere. This includes the biennial WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, which tracks the status of the tobacco epidemic and interventions to combat it and other relevant resources. Many people diagnosed with EVALI need to be treated in a hospital where medications can be closely monitored, and respiratory support is readily available.
Poison centers began receiving calls about e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products in 2010, which overlaps with the initial period where these products reached the U.S. market. Detection and phagocytosis of pathogens is key to macrophage function and in many cases is the first step in orchestrating an immune response to infection in the airways. Any effect of e-cigarette vapour on the phagocytic ability of AMs is therefore of potential significance to the innate immune response in vivo.
Dr. Charles H. Hennekens, the first author of the study, warned about the severe implications of vaping. Initially, in 2015, more boys (2.8%) were using EVPs compared to girls (1.1%). By 2021, this trend reversed with 5.6% of girls vaping compared to 4.5% of boys. The study highlighted not only the rise in general usage but also interesting shifts in demographic patterns. Meanwhile, a competitor has received federal approval for a stool-based colon cancer screening test to rival Exact Sciences’ similar Cologuard.
With the rise in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette, e-cigs or vapes) and vaping use among youth, teens and young adults, the Health Department and our team are working to prevent initiation and reduce vaping of all substances in Vermont. As of 2021, 16% of Vermont high school students said they used e-cigarettes at least once in the past 30 days. Students who smoke cigarettes, tried flavored tobacco before age 13, binge drink or use cannabis vape at the highest rates.
The increase in e-cigarette use (also called vaping) by kids and young people in recent years is a serious public health threat. Since being introduced to the U.S. market in 2007, e-cigarette use among youth has increased to epidemic levels (Surgeon General’s Advisory on E-cigarette Use Among Youth, 2018). The availability of flavored e-cigarettes is one of the most commonly cited reasons for e-cigarette use among youth (Tsai et al., 2018). Given the importance of flavors contributing to use of e-cigarettes among youth, these data briefs build on this previously published article, providing an update on trends in unit sales of e-cigarettes in the U.S. by product and flavor type. These retail sales data briefs are intended to provide information about population trends in sales for participating retailers; they do not include online sales or vape store sales and cannot be used to make conclusions about subgroup purchasing or behaviors. These estimates are based on the information available at the time of publication and may be subject to updates as more information becomes available.
E-cigarette companies have promoted unsubstantiated health claims about their products as healthier than traditional cigarettes, when smokvapeeesti, in fact, e-cigarettes are uniquely dangerous for kids due to nicotine’s impact on their developing brains. This cross-sectional study highlights a high prevalence of e-cigarette use among adults in the US, particularly among young adults, in 2021. A striking finding is that 71.5% of those aged 18 to 20 years who reported e-cigarette use had no prior history of combustible cigarette use—this number is numerically higher compared with prior BRFSS data.
Federal regulators have targeted flavored vape liquids to rein in underage sales and use. Early results from a national survey of teen tobacco and e-cig use show vaping among teens continued to rise well into 2019. The National Institute on Drug Abuse found 1 in 4 high school seniors had vaped nicotine products within the last month. For 10th graders, the rate was 1 in 5, and for 8th graders, it was 1 in 11.
Furthermore, some argue that “vaping” can be a gateway to regular cigarettes. Some e-cigarettes are made to look like regular tobacco products or may resemble pens, USB sticks, and other everyday items. Given their elusive casing, it makes them easy to conceal or identify, allowing teens to use them at home and in schools as well as a vehicle for marijuana and other drugs. A complete flavor ban (i.e., ban all added flavors) and enforcing compliance of retailers to the policy is crucial to control e-cigarette use.
Many popular e-cigarettes, like JUUL, are pod-based with single-use plastic cartridges containing nicotine. Generating even more waste are disposable e-cigarettes like Puff Bar, which are designed entirely for one-time use and have skyrocketed in popularity with a 1,000% increase in use among high school students between 2019 and 2020. And the 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey found that more than 2 million middle and high school kids were current users of e-cigarettes, and that approximately 85% used a flavored product. The flavors that are the most popular with kids are fruit, candy, mint, and menthol.

Since 2022, California law has prohibited the sale of most flavored tobacco products, with some exemptions. The law, however, allows local jurisdictions such as Sonoma County to adopt more restrictive flavor policies.
Vitamin E acetate was present in bronchoalveolar-lavage (BAL) fluid in 48 out of 51 EVALI patients from 16 states, but it was not found in BAL fluid from the comparison group of 99 healthy individuals. E-cigarettes are threatening to addict a new generation to nicotine. E-cigarette use among young people, many of whom were not smokers in the first place, has skyrocketed in recent years. Nearly 20% of high school students, one in five, use e-cigarettes, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey. Young people who use e-cigarettes are also more likely to start smoking cigarettes than their peers who do not vape. The FDA has also reported that, among current youth users of e-cigarettes, 97% used a flavored e-cigarette in the past month.
The findings conclude that inhalation of e-cig aerosols from nicotine-salt-containing e-liquids could increase cardiovascular risks by inducing sympathetic dominance and cardiac arrhythmias. Overall, there were 357 female participants (33.5%), the mean (SD) age was 33. 9 (3.1) years, and participants smoked on average 16 cigarettes per day. Meaning ECs are an effective option for smokers seeking help with quitting smoking. Because vaping is far less harmful than smoking, your health could benefit from switching from smoking to vaping. In 2018 alone, the number of high school students who vape nearly doubled.
The pouches have flavorings and other constituents in there that haven’t historically been in nicotine products before. So while they don’t have the conventional carcinogens we know are present at high levels in tobacco, we don’t know what some of the other things are going to do. This is due in part to the early introduction and widespread availability of e-cigarettes. Other countries have also reported increases in teen vaping, but the prevalence in the U.S. is notably high. By the early 2010s, as vaping devices became more sophisticated and flavors more appealing, their use among teenagers began to rise significantly.
The liquid (also known as “e-liquid,” “juice,” or “pods”) in vaping devices almost always contains nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can lead to serious health consequences, especially for young people whose brains and bodies are still developing. Some e-liquid, including the e-liquid contained in JUUL pods, have a notably high nicotine concentration. In terms of nicotine consumption, vaping one pod is equivalent to 200 puffs or one whole pack of traditional combustible cigarettes. E-liquids may also contain other unhealthy chemicals and compounds, including heavy metals, ultrafine particles, and carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals).
Then there are other pouches that contain synthetically made nicotine, which is made in the lab and is not derived from tobacco. I don’t know if it’s always apparent from the label whether it’s synthetic or not, but that’s a nuance that we’ve seen in our research. This trend was exacerbated by aggressive marketing, which often targeted younger audiences with social media campaigns and appealing flavors, leading to widespread use among teens throughout the decade.
In addition, PG with nicotine caused increased macrophage and CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes cell counts in BALF compared to air control, but these effects were ameliorated when animals were sub-chronically exposed to PG alone [42]. Urgent action is needed to control e-cigarettes to protect children, as well as non-smokers and minimize health harms to the population. E-cigarettes as consumer products are not shown to be effective for quitting tobacco use at the population level. Instead, alarming evidence has emerged on adverse population health effects. E-cigarettes (often called vape pens) are battery-operated vaping devices that heat a liquid until it becomes an aerosol (mist), which is inhaled. It usually contains nicotine, other harmful chemicals, and flavorings.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the deleterious effects of battery output voltage are not comparable to those exerted by CS extracts [30] (Figs. 1 and 2). With regards to toxicity, little is known about the effects of humectants when they are heated and chronically inhaled. Studies have indicated that PG can induce respiratory irritation and increase the probability of asthma development [55, 56], and both PG and glycerol from e-cigarettes might reach concentrations sufficiently high to potentially cause irritation of the airways [57]. Indeed, the latter study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a PG exposure of 430–603 mg/m3, which is higher than the levels reported to cause airway irritation (average 309 mg/m3) based on a human study [55]. The same study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a glycerol exposure of 348–495 mg/m3 [57], which is close to the levels reported to cause airway irritation in rats (662 mg/m3) [58].
As of January 1, 2016 there are no exemptions for electronic cigarette retail outlets, smoke shops, bars or other venues. NAC significantly attenuated both the cytotoxic activity and pro-apoptotic effects of condensate with or without nicotine. As shown with AMs, in THP-1 macrophages, ECVC caused significantly greater loss of viability and significantly more apoptosis than nfECVC, again suggesting a nicotine dependent and independent mechanism of action. We chose a second-generation END, popular in the UK, to produce condensate (Kanger Ltd, Shenzhen, China; see online supplementary figure E1b). The devices were fitted with a standard 650 mAh battery with a fresh 1.8 Ohm coil head (atomiser) for each preparation.
This may, at least in part, be due to ingredients of vape products, including vitamin E acetate, flavorings, and other additives. Flavors and other ingredients may combine to form harmful chemicals when heated. In addition to vitamin E acetate, several non-marijuana-based ingredients you inhale can harm your lungs. Some experts say chest X-rays of people with EVALI show signs of lung irritation by oily chemicals, which could include both vitamin E acetate and THC oil itself. Marijuana vaporizers are typically pen-like devices with an opening to inhale the vapor from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) oils, or to use marijuana concentrates made from parts of the cannabis plant that contain high THC levels.
2 Average reductions in levels of a range of harmful chemicals (excluding nicotine) compared to the smoke of a reference cigarette (3R4F). 1 Average reductions in levels of a range of harmful chemicals (excluding nicotine) compared to the smoke of a reference cigarette (3R4F). These smoke-free products are not risk-free, as they provide nicotine, which is addictive.
