Then there are products that were on the market already and that were the subject of an application that was submitted by the deadline, but we haven’t gotten to their application yet. The agency crackdown underlined the FDA’s muscle-flexing on its authority to require FDA approval for new flavored products.

SPRINGFIELD – E-cigarette use will no longer permitted in indoor public spaces in Illinois beginning January 1, 2024, under a new state law signed earlier this year by Gov. JB Pritzker. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) supports the intent of the new law, one of several taking effect in the New Year that will improve public health across the state. This NYTS—administered Jan. 18- May 21, 2021—was the first to be fully conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected using an online survey to allow eligible students to participate in the classroom, at home or in some other place to account for various school settings during this time.

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, e-vaporizers, or electronic nicotine delivery systems, are battery-operated devices that people use to inhale an aerosol, which typically contains nicotine (though not always), flavorings, and other chemicals. Some common nicknames for e-cigarettes include e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, and mods (customizable, more powerful vaporizers). E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes but commonly have a power source (battery), a heating element (atomizer), a mouthpiece, and a cartridge or reservoir to hold liquid. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the deleterious effects of battery output voltage are not comparable to those exerted by CS extracts [30] (Figs. 1 and 2). With regards to toxicity, little is known about the effects of humectants when they are heated and chronically inhaled. Studies have indicated that PG can induce respiratory irritation and increase the probability of asthma development [55, 56], and both PG and glycerol from e-cigarettes might reach concentrations sufficiently high to potentially cause irritation of the airways [57]. Indeed, the latter study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a PG exposure of 430–603 mg/m3, which is higher than the levels reported to cause airway irritation (average 309 mg/m3) based on a human study [55]. The same study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a glycerol exposure of 348–495 mg/m3 [57], which is close to the levels reported to cause airway irritation in rats (662 mg/m3) [58].

We continues to work with families and policymakers to help make sure that these devices are kept out of the hands of children. They work by heating a pod of e-liquid or “juice” that contains nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. When heated, the liquid creates an aerosol or vapor that users inhale. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can affect learning, memory, and attention. It can also increase risk for future addiction to nicotine and other drugs. However, many young users report they began using e-cigarettes because of the flavors and, according to CDC, do not realize they are inhaling nicotine.

Enter e-cigarettes, which were new, high-tech, and came with no proven health risks. There were no long-term studies yet, but common sense dictated that if you wanted to quit inhaling tobacco through smoking, the least you could do was switch to e-cigarettes. To date, the FDA has authorized only 23 tobacco-flavored e-cigarette products and devices. These are the only vape products legally marketed and sold in the U.S. We do know from my research that they can cause acute adverse events. Some people have reported developing mouth lesions from using them too much.

However, additional follow up studies are required in COVID-19 pandemic to clarify the effect of e-cigarette use on lung and cardiovascular complications derived from SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as “Generally Recognised as Safe” [54].

Nicotine has significant biologic activity and adversely affects several physiological systems including the cardiovascular, respiratory, immunological and reproductive systems, and can also compromise lung and kidney function [41]. In general, most of the cytokines detected in BALF were significantly increased in WT mice exposed to PG with nicotine compared to PG alone or air control [42]. Some of these effects were found to be through nicotine activation of NF-κB signalling albeit in females but not in males.

We believe this is an important step in establishing an in vitro system by which to investigate the effects of e-cigarettes on the airways. Finally, we have not assessed the effects of flavours on cellular effects,43 partly because this adds another layer of uncertainty and potential confounders. However, the data provide a background on which to study these other potential factors, with and without nicotine.

In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47]. In this latter regard, no differences were encountered in the frequency of tumour appearance in rats subjected to long-term (2 years) inhalation of nicotine when compared with control rats [48]. Despite the lack of carcinogenicity evidence, it has been reported that nicotine promotes tumour cell survival by decreasing apoptosis and increasing proliferation [49], indicating that it may work as a “tumour enhancer”. In a very recent study, chronic administration of nicotine to mice (1 mg/kg every 3 days for a 60-day period) enhanced brain metastasis by skewing the polarity of M2 microglia, which increases metastatic tumour growth [50].

While further research is needed to fully understand the effects of e-cigarette exposure in humans in vivo, we caution against the widely held opinion that e-cigarettes are safe. E-cigarettes have been allowed on the open market and aggressively marketed to young people. Thirty-four countries ban the sale of e-cigarettes, 88 countries have no minimum age at which e-cigarettes can be bought and 74 countries have no regulations in place for these harmful products.

As the user draws on the device, the battery heats the e-liquid to produce aerosol (not water vapor). The battery-operated devices come in many forms and can look like conventional cigarettes, pens or even sleek tech gadgets. This way of taking in nicotine poses health risks to both users and non-users. The 2021 report also provides details on some characteristics of e-cigarette products, including flavors and nicotine concentration, as well as the bundling of the components in cartridge systems. The data shows that in 2021, 69.2 percent of e-cigarette cartridges either sold or given away contained menthol-flavored e-liquids, and the rest were tobacco-flavored. The monitoring of other tobacco product sales in conjunction with the monitoring of e-cigarette sales is necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of the overall U.S. tobacco product market.

Since ditching e-cigarettes for cigarettes, I’m back to smoking on weekends only. I couldn’t do cardio to save my life; walking up stairs sucked the wind out of me. My stamina and day-to-day life was vastly more affected by this vaping habit than when I used to just smoke a few cigarettes on Saturday nights. In other words, just because something is safe to eat doesn’t mean it’s safe to be inhaled.

So, if you are vaping to quit smoking, you should aim to eventually stop vaping too. In 2022, UK experts reviewed the international evidence and found that “in the short and medium term, vaping poses a small fraction of the risks of smoking”. Our Board of Health is a leader in protecting people from the dangers of e-cigarettes and vapor products. Vapes contain nicotine and other substances like THC that negatively affect brain development in youth.

One of the most popular e-cigarettes is Juul, but hundreds of different e-cigarette brands are currently available to consumers. In June 2022, the FDA banned Juul from selling it’s products after finding the company provided “insufficient and conflicting data” on risks. In light of this spike in youth e-cigarette use, along with the recent U.S. outbreak linked to more than 2,000 lung illnesses and over 40 deaths, the AMA has called for a total ban on all e-cigarette and vaping products that do not meet FDA approval as cessation tools.

The research lacks a control group of teens who did not vape at all, but the pattern evident within a US sample of 200 e-cigarette users who avoided cigarettes is still concerning. For the sake of public health, the researchers argue for further investigation into the potential toxicity of e-cigarettes. Finally, the researchers compared the levels of nicotine in the blood serum of people after they had vaped e-cigarettes with the levels in people who smoked traditional cigarettes. They found that the amounts of nicotine in the blood were similar between the two groups after 10 minutes of smoking at a constant rate. The flavoring liquid for electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease when inhaled, according to a study led by researchers at the School of Medicine. Public health groups want the FDA to more aggressively police regular cigarettes and flavored e-cigarettes that appeal to teenagers.

Tried and tested interventions, such as brief advice from health professionals, national toll-free quit lines and mobile and digital cessation services are recommended. Where economically feasible, governments should also consider promoting nicotine replacement therapies and non-nicotine pharmacotherapies for cessation. And it bears repeating that most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which has known health effects beyond addiction.

We calculated the optimal puff duration of 3 s every 30 s based on published data.16–21 This allows time for the vapour to condense between each puff and prevented overheating of the device; 1.4 mL of ECL/nicotine-free ECL (nfECL) was vaped from each device. Law enforcement officers need to understand the value of collecting e-cigarette and vaping paraphernalia as evidence. Varenicline, perhaps better known by the brand name Chantix, is FDA-approved to help adults to stop smoking traditional cigarettes. But, despite the growing numbers of people who use e-cigarettes, there are no approved medication options to help them to stop using e-cigarettes. It made sense – Altria, the bad actor formerly known as Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, owned a 35% stake in JUUL. With so many adults kicking the cigarette smoking habit, Altria was looking for ways to sustain its financial stability. A French study from the same year found similar results, but also it found that e-cig use among smokers increased the risk of relapse into tobacco use.

Randomization was conducted via a central randomization system for clinical research. Randomization sequences were generated using Proc Plan in SAS, version 9.3 (SAS Institute), with trial sites as the stratification factor and a block length of 5. Poison centers began receiving calls about e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products in 2010, which overlaps with the initial period where these products reached the U.S. market. Detection and phagocytosis of pathogens is key to macrophage function and in many cases is the first step in orchestrating an immune response to infection in the airways. Any effect of e-cigarette vapour on the phagocytic ability of AMs is therefore of potential significance to the innate immune response in vivo.

People in the combustible tobacco cohort were asked to smoke either a combustible cigarette, a JUUL e-cigarette with 5% nicotine, a research no-nicotine cigarette, or an empty straw. People in the e-cigarette cohort were asked to take 3-second puffs every 30 seconds for 15 minutes on either a mint-flavored e-cigarette (JUUL) with 5% nicotine, a mint-flavored e-cigarette (JUUL) with 0% nicotine, or an empty straw. Afterwards, an EKG was recorded for 5 minutes while lying down in the recliner, followed again by abrupt standing.

As of April 30, 2024, Poison Centers have managed 2,816 e-cigarette and liquid nicotine related exposure cases. When users inhale from the end of an e-cigarette, a battery-operated device heats a liquid solution (e-liquid or e-juice) into an aerosol. Use of e-cigarettes mimics conventional cigarette smoking, and e-cigarettes also contain the same addictive ingredient, nicotine. Results Macrophage culture with ECL or ECVC resulted in a dose-dependent reduction in cell viability. ECVC was cytotoxic at lower concentrations than ECL and resulted in increased apoptosis and necrosis. Exposure of AMs to a sub-lethal 0.5% ECVC/nfECVC increased ROS production approximately 50-fold and significantly inhibited phagocytosis.

Given the products’ relatively recent introduction to the marketplace, further research is needed to evaluate the short and long term health impacts of e-cigarettes. The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals.

Compared with heterosexual individuals, persons who identified as bisexual had a higher prevalence of current e-cigarette use (12.2% [95% CI, 11.0%-13.7%] vs 6.8% [95% CI, 6.6%-7.1%]) and daily e-cigarette use (6.5% [95% CI, 5.4%-7.8%] vs 3.2% [95% CI, 3.0%-3.3%]). We summarized participant sociodemographics and chronic health conditions using proportions for the entire sample and for those reporting current and daily e-cigarette use. We calculated the age-standardized prevalence of current and daily e-cigarette use overall, within subgroups including combustible cigarette use categories (never, former, or current), and across age groups. Household income level was based on the 2021 federal poverty line.20 Weight and height were self-reported; body mass index was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.

Strong decisive action is needed to prevent the uptake of e-cigarettes based on the growing body of evidence of its use by children and adolescents and health harms. Little research has been conducted into the safety of e-cigarettes and e-liquids in pregnancy. It is not known whether the vapour is harmful to a baby in pregnancy.

They are not yet regulated nor approved for smoking cessation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.The long-term health effects to users and bystanders are still unknown. In 2022, e-cigarettes remained the most common tobacco product used by high school (16.5%) and middle school (4.5%) students in the last 30 days.

A 2020 Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) study showed students removed from school for non-criminal offenses in Texas were 23% more likely to have future contact with the justice system. The new Texas law that went into effect Sept. 1 adds possession of an e-cigarette to Section 37 of the Texas Education Code. That section details some of the most serious offenses a student can commit and requires removal from school. The felony offenses include bringing a gun to school digiflavor cigarette électronique, making terroristic threats, and violent assault.

Electronic cigarettes were first developed in the early 2000s and introduced to the U.S. market around 2007. Moreover, vaping could serve as a gateway to cigarette smoking, which continues to be a major cause of preventable death globally. However, e-cigarettes may help non-pregnant adult smokers if used as a complete substitute for all cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.

E-cigarettes are also called e-cigs, vape pens, vapes, mods, and other terms. If at any point you feel at risk of going back to smoking, increase your nicotine strength or vaping frequency until the feelings go away. Only reduce your vaping frequency or nicotine strength when you feel you will not go back to smoking and do not have to puff more to compensate. Once I finally became aware of what was going on, and after many family meetings with his counselor, doctor, school smok vape pen nord, and church, Jacob started the hard work of taking back his life. It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one. With nicotine-containing products, vaping may be safer than smoking. It involves fewer hazardous chemicals and results in less lung damage.

Starting in 2019, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) began accepting e-cigarette devices and cartridges during their annual National Prescription Take Back Day, although the DEA cannot accept devices containing lithium ion batteries. Guidance exists on best practices on this concept of accountability — known as end-producer responsibility — but isn’t enforced across the industry by any governing body. “These alarming trends in the use of EVPs suggest the need for targeted interventions such as mass media campaigns and peer interventions to combat the influences of social norms that promote the adoption of risky health behaviors during adolescence,” said Hennekens. “Clinical interventions could include routine screening for vaping and nicotine dependence during adolescent health assessments as well as counseling and tailored cessation programs.” In 2022, 6% of adults in the U.S. reported current vaping device use. Widespread use by adults has raised concerns about EVP use among adolescents.

E-cigarettes heat up liquid from replaceable cartridges, producing the vapor. Just like a smoker does, an e-cigarette user inhales the vapor through the device, then exhales. The availability of flavored e-cigarettes is one of the most commonly cited reasons for e-cigarette use among youth (Tsai et al., 2018). Given the importance of flavors contributing to use of e-cigarettes among youth, these data briefs build on this previously published article, providing an update on trends in unit sales of e-cigarettes in the U.S. by product and flavor type. These retail sales data briefs are intended to provide information about population trends in sales for participating retailers; they do not include online sales or vape store sales and cannot be used to make conclusions about subgroup purchasing or behaviors. These estimates are based on the information available at the time of publication and may be subject to updates as more information becomes available.

Despite making great strides to reduce smoking, tobacco is still our biggest killer. Our region has always kept an open mind towards using electronic cigarettes as we can see the massive potential health benefits from switching. The scientists investigated the effect of the e-liquids on cells called endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels. They found that, when grown in a laboratory, endothelial cells exposed to the e-liquids — or to blood collected from e-cigarette users shortly after vaping — are less viable and exhibit significantly increased levels of molecules implicated in DNA damage and cell death. The cells are also less able to form new vascular tubes and to migrate and participate in wound healing. Overall, comparisons of the particle-size distribution in aerosols from e-cigarettes found that the substances tested had particle distributions similar to the traditional e-liquids containing nicotine.

However, because the youth e-cigarette epidemic in the United States and the youth appeal of flavored e-cigarettes go hand in hand, Truth Initiative strongly supports removing all flavored e-cigarettes from the market, regardless of device type. At a minimum, an e-cigarette manufacturer must show that the flavor itself is safe, helps smokers switch completely from combustible cigarettes, and does not attract youth before a product is allowed to go to market. In addition to flavor restrictions, Truth Initiative supports strong regulations to keep all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, away from youth. More recent studies have suggested that young e-cigarette users are four times more likely to begin smoking cigarettes compared to their peers who do not use e-cigarettes. E-cigarette use has increased in recent years, especially among youth and young adults, who use e-cigarettes more than any other age group.

Other compounds that have been detected in aerosols include acetamide, a potential human carcinogen [5], and some aldehydes [69], although their levels were minimal. Interestingly, the existence of harmful concentrations of diethylene glycol, a known cytotoxic agent, in e-liquid aerosols is contentious with some studies detecting its presence [4, 68, 70,71,72], and others finding low subtoxic concentrations [73, 74].

This conclusion was widely reported by Chinese media during the next year or so and discussed repeatedly at the WeChat forum, and we estimate that it led some 20% of participants in the EC arm to stop EC use. As a result, we estimate that some 15% of participants in the varenicline arm stopped using their product. These events may have reduced quit rates in the EC and varenicline arms, but this would dilute rather than amplify the difference between these 2 arms and the NRT arm. This study found that compared with nonusers, e-cigarette users were 56 percent more likely to have a heart attack and 30 percent more likely to suffer a stroke uwellbrunei, according to the release. Respondents who used e-cigarettes because of the flavor were more likely to continue using banned flavors (statistically significant for non-TM flavors but not for menthol). Those primarily using non-TM flavors before the ban were most likely to quit using e-cigarettes and more likely to continue the same flavor afterward.

Some individuals who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. Since smoking kills fully half of all long-time users, successfully stopping smoking leads to well-documented health benefits. Nonetheless, adults who smoke who switch to using e-cigarettes expose themselves to potentially serious ongoing health risks. If they are unable to quit e-cigarettes on their own, they should seek help from a health care professional or quitline. Individuals who are not yet able to stop using e-cigarettes should be strongly discouraged from simultaneous, or “dual,” use of any combustible tobacco products, including cigarettes. Continuing to smoke exposes the individual to enormous harms, irrespective of whether the individual is using e-cigarettes part of the time.

Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes were developed and marketed as alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes. However, e-cigarettes are not an FDA-approved quit aid, and there is no conclusive scientific evidence on the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for long-term smoking cessation. They have the potential to benefit adult smokers who are not pregnant if used as a complete substitute for regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products. Researchers are working hard to gather more information about e-cigarettes and how they are used. Studies on e-cigarettes as a quitting aid for nicotine addiction and cigarette use are few, with mixed and modest results. Some show that they are about equal in effectiveness to that of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) – like the nicotine patch. Although evidence is lacking, e-cigarettes for inhalation of nicotine may be beneficial in reducing adverse health effects related to the use of combustible tobacco products. However, e-cigarettes are not FDA approved as a smoking cessation tool and the amount of nicotine and other substances a person inhales from each nicotine cartridge remains unclear. When FDA “deemed” e-cigarettes as part of its jurisdiction in 2016, it gave e-cigarettes that were currently on the market two years to prepare premarket applications (known as PMTAs). These applications are what FDA uses to to determine whether new tobacco products are “appropriate for the protection of public health” before they are allowed on the market.

But if online vendors either flout or are unaware of these laws, young people may still have access to flavored tobacco products. Currently, MRTP marketing claims are not effective in convincing people who smoke that the products are less harmful than cigarettes. In one study, our team looked at the marketing claims used by two FDA-authorized MRTPs, and found that only 1 in 4 people who smoke cigarettes believe that a product with MRTP claims is much less harmful or addictive than cigarettes. This misconception can stop people from considering a switch to lower-risk tobacco products.
